Homicides at Lansing fitness center, Chicago Heights street

Homicides were reported in the past week at a Lansing fitness center and in Chicago Heights, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police.

In an Oct. 7 shooting, Lansing police said they were alerted shortly before 7 p.m. to a report of shots fired at Planet Fitness, 17675 Torrence Ave., and found a 36-year-old Lansing man.

Ron Johnson Jr., of the 17200 block of Chicago Avenue in Lansing, had a gunshot wound to his head and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Police said Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating, and ask anyone with information contact Lansing investigators at 708-895-7150, or on the department’s anonymous tip line, 708-895-7105.

Lansing police said Johnson was on parole at the time of the shooting for a prior conviction of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Police said he had an ankle monitor on when officers responded to Planet Fitness.

In Chicago Heights, a resident died Tuesday morning from a gunshot wound to his head, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Reginald Cleghorn Jr., 32, of the 400 block of West Lincoln Highway in Chicago Heights, died shortly after 9 a.m. at the scene of the shooting in the 1500 block of Otto Boulevard, according to the office.

More information about the shooting was not immediately available from police.
