Science turns explosive in Renaissance’s ‘The How and the Why’

Elyse Edelman and Mary MacDonald Kerr perform in "The How and the Why,' staged by Renaissance Theaterworks.

Science has been called a self-correcting process. But it also can be a brutally messy one.

Just ask Zelda (Mary MacDonald Kerr) and Rachel (Elyse Edelman), whose wounds are inextricably connected to their vocations as scientists.

Renaissance Theaterworks opened its production of Sarah Treem’s “The How and the Why” Saturday night. Directed by Suzan Fete, it’s a smart drama about two people whose emotional intelligence doesn’t equal their intellectual brilliance.
